چکیده

PART I WITH improvements in maternal obstetric management, it is possible to turn increasingly to the care of the child, especially throughout labour and in the immediate postnatal period, when the child is at greatest risk. Though the signs considered to indicate foetal distress have been recognized for many years, it is, however, also necessary to assess the urgency and the severity of the threat to the child’s life, for, although the majority of babies recover quickly at birth, any tendency to foetal asphyxia is evidence that the margin of safety has been reduced. It is the purpose of this investigation to determine the incidence and evaluate the significance of the various classical signs of foetal distress, to correlate the occurrence of these signs with the incidence of foetal asphyxia at birth, and to consider whether it is desirable to take into account minor deviations from normal.

Intrauterine resuscitation during the second stage of term labour by maternal hyperoxygenation versus conventional care: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial (INTEREST O2)

BACKGROUND Perinatal asphyxia is, even in developed countries, one the major causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Therefore, if foetal distress during labour is suspected, one should try to restore foetal oxygen levels or aim for immediate delivery. However, studies on the effect of intrauterine resuscitation during labour are scarce. We designed a randomised controlled trial to investig...

Placental transfusion as an intrauterine phenomenon in deliveries complicated by foetal distress.

The details of the deliveries of 10 infants whose cords were clamped before the onset of respiration and within one minute of delivery of the chin but whose residual placental volumes were unexpectedly low are compared with 20 control infants whose cords were clamped under similar conditions but who had the expected residual placental volumes. The only statistically significant difference betwe...

Antenatally Diagnosed Wilms’ Tumour

Wilms' tumour (WT) is seldom seen in a neonate and prenatal diagnosis is rare. We present a case of antenatally diagnosed left sided WT with features of hydrops foetalis in a girl baby. Emergency LSCS was done at 34 weeks of gestation for foetal distress. Patient required mechanical ventilation for birth asphyxia and congestive cardiac failure. After stabilization, gross total resection of the ...

Diagnosis of foetal asphyxia in labour.

For many years intermittent recording of the foetal heart rate with a stethoscope and the detection of meconium in the liquor have been the only signs used for diagnosing intrapartum foetal asphyxia. Although the system has the virtue of simplicity, the unexpected disappearance of foetal heart sound when the foetal heart rate was being recorded as normal, or the frequent delivery of a vigorous ...
